Camp cooking dutch oven recipes are easy

from:

Camp cooking dutch oven recipes are the perfect way to enjoy a meal around the campfire that is both fulfilling and easy to prepare. All you need is a dutch oven, which is a thick-walled metal pot, and some hot coals. If you take camping trips with your whole family, camp cooking dutch oven recipes are a good pick for satisfying everyone for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, without wasting much of your camping time preparing food.

Camp cooking dutch oven recipes include breakfast items such as muffins, egg sausage bake, and biscuits and hearty dinners including stew, chili, dumplings, roasted chicken, and beans. Even desserts can be enjoyed while roughing it outdoors, such as chocolate cake, apple dumplings, and fruit cobbler.

Following is one of the simple camp cooking dutch oven recipes for breakfast, egg sausage bake. This meal can be doubled to feed a large camping group, and is sure to fuel you for the day.

• Place 1 package of sausage links in the bottom of the dutch oven that has been lightly coated with oil or sprayed with cooking spray
• Layer one sliced potato on top and season with salt and pepper
• Pour 6 eggs on top that have been whipped with about ¼ cup of water and ½ cup of chopped onions
• Top with 1 cup of shredded cheese of your choice
• Place dutch oven on top of hot coals or on a tripod over the fire, trying to achieve medium heat
• The dish is done when a knife is inserted and comes out clean – after about 30 minutes

Camp cooking dutch oven recipes start with a seasoned dutch oven that is ready to be cooked in. Seasoning your cast iron dutch oven prior to use is important to prevent rust and allow your dutch oven to last you a lifetime. It will also create a non-stick surface in your dutch oven. The seasoning procedure is simple and only needs to be done once. To season your cast iron dutch oven, first cover the insides with a thin layer of oil, such as vegetable oil or canola oil. Next, place the dutch oven upside down in the center of your kitchen oven. Leave it at 375 degrees for about an hour, then repeat the process after it has cooled enough for your to oil again. After a second baking, the dutch oven is ready for a final layer of oil. Now your dutch oven is seasoned and ready for camp cooking dutch oven recipes. An aluminum dutch oven will not need to be seasoned before cooking up some campfire food.
